6×5000Ton Grain Storage for Grain Traders — Nigeria

6×5000Ton Grain Storage for Grain Traders — Nigeria — Nigeria
30,000 t Capacity corn, soybean, sorghum Completed 2025

Project Summary

The challenge: The Nigerian regional grain trading company faced mounting operational pressures as seasonal procurement volumes consistently exceeded their existing storage capacity of approximately 8,000 tonnes. During peak harvest periods, the company was forced to turn away an estimated 12,000 to 15,000 tonnes of maize, sorghum, and soybeans annually due to insufficient bin space, directly impacting revenue potential and supplier relationships. Post-harvest losses from inadequate storage were significant, with moisture migration and temperature fluctuations in conventional facilities causing spoilage rates of 8–12% in stored grain, translating to roughly 640–960 tonnes of lost product each cycle. Manual loading and unloading operations required 15–20 laborers per shift, driving annual labor costs upward of $45,000 while achieving truck turnaround times of 45–60 minutes per vehicle, creating bottlenecks during high-volume intake days. Additionally, the lack of segregated storage compartments made it impossible to maintain grain variety purity, forcing the company to either commingle maize, sorghum, and soybean lots or limit procurement to single-commodity batches, severely constraining trading flexibility. The company sought a solution that would deliver at least 30,000 tonnes of controlled-atmosphere storage capacity, reduce post-harvest losses below 3%, cut truck turnaround to under 20 minutes, and enable simultaneous handling of multiple grain varieties without cross-contamination—all while achieving a target ROI within five years of operation.

Our solution: Manxing delivered a turnkey EPC solution engineered specifically for Nigeria's tropical climate and the operational demands of high-volume grain trading. The core storage infrastructure comprises six galvanized steel silos, each with a 5,000T capacity, delivering 30,000T of total working storage. Each silo measures 22 meters in diameter and 28 meters in eave height, constructed from high-tensile G115 galvanized steel sheets with 600g/m² zinc coating to resist the aggressive humidity and coastal atmospheric conditions prevalent across Nigeria. The foundation system utilizes reinforced concrete ring-wall footings engineered for the region's lateritic soil profiles, with a 350mm-thick reinforced concrete slab floor incorporating radial aeration ducting. The receiving system features a heavy-duty truck receiving pit rated for 80T live load, feeding a two-stage cleaning circuit comprising a rotary pre-cleaner and a vibrating screen cleaner, both sized for 100T/h throughput, removing chaff, straw, and foreign material before grain enters storage. Material handling is executed through a network of four bucket elevators (100T/h capacity each, 32-meter centers) and six belt conveyors with 80mm belt width and 60T/h rated capacity, enabling simultaneous receiving and load-out operations. A 12-outlet grain distribution manifold with motorized diverter gates allows operators to route grain to any silo or discharge point within the facility in under three minutes. Climate resilience is addressed through a forced aeration system delivering 0.5 m³/min/m³ of grain volume, powered by 7.5kW centrifugal fans per silo, maintaining grain temperature below 25°C to suppress insect metabolic activity and prevent moisture migration. The temperature monitoring system deploys 144 thermocouple cables across all six silos, providing real-time readings at 1.5-meter vertical intervals. The PLC automatic control system integrates all mechanical, electrical, and process functions into a centralized SCADA interface, enabling remote operation from the control room with automated aeration scheduling based on ambient humidity and grain temperature differentials. Dust collection is handled by four pulse-jet baghouse units with 99.5% filtration efficiency, ensuring compliance with local environmental regulations. The facility was designed for a 30-year structural service life with a projected ROI within 4.2 years based on reduced post-harvest losses from an estimated 25% to under 2% and improved grain quality retention for premium market pricing.

The outcome: The completed 6×5000T grain storage facility delivered transformative operational and financial outcomes for the client. Total capacity of 30,000 tonnes across six steel silos (each approximately 22m diameter × 25m height) enabled the client to purchase and store up to 15,000 tonnes of maize and sorghum during peak harvest windows at prices averaging 18–22% below off-season market rates. Integrated temperature monitoring and automated aeration systems maintained grain temperatures within the 18–22°C target range across all six bins, reducing moisture migration and keeping post-storage losses below 0.8% — significantly under the regional industry average of 3–5%. Automated loading and conveying equipment achieved a throughput of 150 tonnes per hour, cutting vehicle loading times by approximately 60% compared to previous manual operations. Inventory accuracy improved to 99.2%, eliminating discrepancies that previously cost an estimated $40,000 annually. The client reported a projected return on investment within 2.5 years, driven by reduced grain loss, lower procurement costs, and faster order turnaround. The facility now serves as a regional hub supporting over 12,000 tonnes of grain turnover per quarter.
